Description

The General Epistles include a seven short letters: one from James, the half-brother of Jesus, two from the hand of the apostle Peter, three by the apostle John, and one by Jude, another half-brother of Jesus. Together, they cover significant doctrine and show how truth relates to everyday life in the church and in relationships.

James and Jude were probably familiar with Jesus (their half-brother) due to their shared family upbringing. They had a front-row seat for observing Jesus’ daily routines and interactions with people. They saw how truth worked its way out in His day to day life. It is not difficult to imagine how this experience influenced their writings, where they point us to the practical outworking of faith. Peter and John, on the other hand, were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ life and ministry and spoke from their three-and-a-half years of intense spiritual teaching by the Lord. They witnessed His suffering, death, and resurrection. They, along with the other disciples, were commissioned to be Jesus’ official eyewitnesses.

The variety of truth covered is broad but concise. Each of these four writers brings a different personality and perspective to theological truth, such that no understanding of the New Testament teaching is adequate without a working knowledge of the teaching in these seven letters. And no spiritual growth is adequate without a devotional appreciation of the teaching of these four men.

The focus of this book is to help you, the reader, develop a continuous, daily habit of reading the Word of God for understanding, and then to apply that understanding to bring about life change, little by little.
